In a tragic incident, an Indian couple died after falling 800 feet in an area with steep terrain in California's Yosemite National Park this week, according to a media report.

Vishnu Viswanath, 29, and Meenakshi Moorthy, 30, fell to their deaths from Taft Point in Yosemite National Park. They were identified on Monday as a married couple from India living in the United States, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

The report said that the couple had recently moved from New York after Vishnu Viswanath took a job as a systems engineer at Cisco, based in San Jose. Together, they chronicled their adventures of travelling around the world in a blog called 'Holidays and HappilyEverAfters'.

Rangers recovered their bodies on the steep terrain on Thursday below Taft Point, a popular tourist spot that offers spectacular views of the Yosemite Valley, Yosemite Falls, and El Capitan. Visitors had spotted the bodies a day earlier.

Park spokesman Jamie Richards was quoted as saying in the report that "We still do not know what caused them to fall. We're trying to understand what happened. We may never know, (but) from everything we see, this was a tragic fall."

Investigators were looking into how the couple fell or what had occurred when the accident happened at the famous spot which is a favourite place for tourists from around the world to take scenic and memorable photos.

Earlier, the National Park Service had said in a statement that the recovery operation for a male and female visitor who had died in the fall from Taft Point was completed on the afternoon of October 25. The department said the two people fell approximately 800 feet below Taft Point in an area with very steep terrain.

This recovery operation involved Park Rangers using technical climbing and rappelling techniques, in addition to helicopter support from the California Highway Patrol for a short-haul operation.
The report added that the couple had been married since 2014 and both were software engineers. On the cover of Vishnu Viswanath's Facebook page is a picture of the two of them smiling on the edge of a cliff at the Grand Canyon.

In a Facebook post, College of Engineering, Chengannur said the two were its alumni and added that it deeply mourns their "accidental demise". The college said Vishnu Viswanath and Meenakshi Moorthy belonged to the BTech 2006-10 Computer Science and Engineering batch.

"Our hearts go to the friends and family members of this lovely couple. May their souls rest in peace," the college said.

Raj Katta, 24, of New York, said he got to know both of them while attending Bradley University, in Illinois. He said Vishnu Viswanath was a "thoughtful and amazing guy, very talented. They are a really happy couple. Very positive."

Mr Katta described Meenakshi Moorthy as extremely positive and enthusiastic. "She's one of those girls who wants to explore the world and discover a deeper meaning in life."

He said in the report that Vishnu and Meenakshi had decided six months ago that he would take the job at Cisco and they would live in California for a year or so.

'Anil Kumble Scolded Players Like Children,' Say Sources About Fallout With Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli and Anil Kumble stopped talking 6 months ago

The Anil Kumble-Virat Kohli spat has been a trending topic since the former tweeted his resignation as India coach highlighting his reasons for quitting the high-profile job - among them that Captain Kohli had "reservations" with his style. But with skipper Virat Kohli prepping for the series with the West Indies, his side of the story is yet to be heard. Sources have told NDTV that there were sharp differences and several reasons why to two were almost destined to fall apart. For one, they alleged, "Anil Kumble treated players like school kids."

The coach reportedly gave the players a "dressing-down" after the team lost the ICC Champions Trophy final to Pakistan at The Oval on June 18. The team members, who were feeling terrible about the loss in any case, felt that their coach was scolding them like children and not treating them like professionals, the sources said. The captain, they said, is very possessive about his team in the dressing room and he was upset at the way Kumble spoke to them.

Kumble stepped down as the head coach of the India cricket team on Tuesday and in soon tweeted a long letter, listing his reasons and the circumstances under which he had left the post. The Indian team was on its way to the West Indies at that moment and till now, there has been no response from Kohli on this. While the news of differences between the coach and captain had been doing the rounds for quite a long time, even the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was taken by surprise by reports that the two were not on talking terms for the 'last six months'.
Nevertheless, the rift was a very defined one and the sources also told NDTV that there were several reasons why to two were almost destined to fall apart.

Kumble wanted to bat first in the final

The source also said that the Indian skipper opted to field in the final but the coach wanted to bat first and put runs on the board. But we all know that Kohli's decision prevailed.

Control over the dressing room

The source elaborated that the two had major issues about dressing room control. The coach wanted players to follow his template -- of a regimented lifestyle -- which Kohli rejected because the current crop feels they multi-task.

Differences began during Australia series

According to the source, the differences first cropped up during the Australia series earlier this year when Kumble decided to field left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in place of the injured Kohli in the fourth and final Test at Dharamsala. It seems Kohli was not aware of Yadav's selection.
The Indian cricket team on Wednesday reached Port of Spain (Trinidad) for a limited-overs series against the West Indies. The first ODI is scheduled for June 23 (Friday).
The cricketing fraternity is still waiting to hear from Kohli on the issue, but the Indian captain has been silent so far.

At UN, Pakistan attacks growing arms sales to India

Pakistan has attacked growing arms sales to India by several countries, including the US and Russia, calling them "double standards" that jeopardise regional balances.

"The policy of double standards towards South Asia, based on narrow strategic, political and commercial considerations, must be eschewed," Jehanzeb Khan, a First Secretary, in Pakistan's UN Mission, said on Monday during a debate on conventional weapons in the General Assembly committee dealing with disarmament.
He did not name India or the countries selling weapons to India, but the context made the references clear.

Khan said in an obvious reference to India that in South Asia "one state's military spending grossly and vastly outnumbers that of others" and that "this has the potential of fueling instability and jeopardising the delicate regional balance."

"Islamabad was concerned over the growing transfers of conventional armaments especially in volatile regions that are inconsistent with the imperatives of maintaining peace, security and stability," he added.

He said, "Pakistan, for its part, is committed to the establishment of a strategic restraint regime in South Asia, which includes an element of conventional force balance.

He did not say how Pakistan would achieve a conventional force balance with India given the wide disparities in the economies of the two countries nor did he acknowledge that India's military capabilities have to take China into account.

Pakistan is smarting under US decisions to block military aid.
Last month, Pentagon said it would withhold $300 million aid in what is known as coalition support funds citing Islamabad's failure to curb terrorist organisations including the Haqqani Network and the Lashkar-e-Taiba.

The Congress cut $500 million in payments to Pakistan from the Defense Department budget in March.

In January President Donald Trump's administration announced it was blocking most military aid to Pakistan estimated to be in the range of $1.3 billion.

Meanwhile last month, India and the US signed the Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement (COMCASA) paving the way for India to access and buy advanced weapons and military technology.

The US is also pitching several advanced military jets and other weaponry to India.

This month India defied the US, which has threatened sanctions on those making military purchases from Russia, and signed a deal with Moscow to buy an advanced air defense missile system, the S400, at an estimated cost of about $5 billion.

Indonesia plane crash search team finds remains, debris at sea

Search and rescue personnel worked through the night to find victims of the Lion Air plane crash in Indonesia, sending 24 body bags to identification experts as the airline flew dozens of grieving relatives to the country’s capital.

Rescuers carry a body bag containing the remains recovered from the area where a Lion Air passenger jet is suspected to crash, at Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The 2-month-old Boeing jet crashed into the Java Sea early Monday, just minutes after taking off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

The 2-month-old Boeing jet crashed into the Java Sea early Monday, just minutes after taking off from Jakarta, killing all 189 people on board.

The National Search and Rescue Agency said Tuesday that 10 intact bodies as well as body parts had been recovered. President Joko Widodo had ordered the search and rescue effort to continue through the night.

The disaster has reignited concerns about safety in Indonesia’s fast-growing aviation industry, which was recently removed from European Union and U.S. blacklists.

Data pinged from the Boeing 737 Max 8 showed erratic speed, altitude and direction in the minutes after takeoff. Safety experts cautioned, however, that the data must be checked for accuracy against the plane’s so-called black boxes, if they are recovered.

Underwater vehicle
Specialist ships and a remotely operated underwater vehicle have been deployed to search for the plane’s hull and flight recorder.

Distraught family members struggled to comprehend the sudden loss of loved ones in the crash of a plane with experienced pilots in fine weather.

“This is a very difficult time for our family,” said Leo Sihombing, outside a crisis center set up for family members at Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta airport.

“We know that it is very unlikely that my cousin is still alive, but no one can provide any certainty or explanation,” he said as other family members wept and hugged each other.

“What we hope now is rescuers can find his body, so we can bury him properly, and authorities can reveal what caused the plane crash,” Sihombing said.

More than 300 people including soldiers, police and fishermen are involved in the grim search, retrieving aircraft debris and personal items such as a crumpled cellphone, ID cards and carry-on bags from the seas northeast of Jakarta.

Search and Rescue Agency chief Muhammad Syaugi has said he’s certain it won’t take long to locate the hull of the aircraft and its flight recorders due to the relatively shallow 30 meter (115 foot) depth of the waters where it crashed.

Rahul Gandhi Protest Against CBI Move Includes "Sit-In" At Police Station

NEW DELHI:
Rahul Gandhi today led a massive opposition protest in Delhi against the government's move to send CBI chief Alok Verma on leave and walked into a police station asking to be arrested. The Congress president and his colleagues spent more than an hour with the cops as hundreds of Congress workers demonstrated outside.

The Congress has slammed the government for what it says is the "illegal, unconstitutional and illegitimate removal of the CBI director". The government has sent Mr Verma and his deputy Rakesh Asthana on forced leave after both accused each other of taking bribe from the same businessman.

Leaders from the Trinamool Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, CPI(M) and other parties marched from Dyal Singh College in central Delhi's Lodhi Road to the CBI headquarters, 4.2 km away. Loktantrik Janata Dal leader Sharad Yadav, CPI's D Raja and TMC's Nadimul Haque joined the Congress protest.

Rahul Gandhi walked ahead of hundreds of people who shouted slogans and carried placards and posters criticising the government. A man holding a white sheet of paper with "CBI" written on it was seen inside a cage - a depiction of the Supreme Court once calling the investigating agency a caged parrot.

Mr Gandhi then got on to a truck in front of police barricades near the CBI headquarters in the CGO complex to prevent the protestors from reaching the building.

Congress general secretary Ashok Ghelot said the party wants Mr Verma to be "reinstated" as the decision to remove him was "illegal".

The protest marches are being organised outside the CBI offices across the country. In some places, police used water canon to rein in the protestors.

Mr Gandhi has said the midnight removal of CBI chief Alok Verma was a "disgraceful and unconstitutional attempt" by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to block an investigation into the Rafale fighter jet deal.

The protest marches are being organised outside the CBI offices across the country. In some places, police used water canon to rein in the protesters.
"Why was M Nageswar Rao appointed as CBI director in a hurry? All parties should protest against this along with Congress party," AAP leader Sanjay Singh said. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said the CBI has become "BBI", short for "BJP bureau of investigation".

In a letter to all Congress general secretaries, state unit chiefs and legislature party leaders, Congress general secretary Ashok Gehlot asked them to hold protests against the BJP government outside all CBI offices across the country.

Setting the agenda for the march, Mr Gandhi on Thursday said Mr Verma being sent on administrative leave was to pre-empt an investigation into the Prime Minister's alleged role in the Rafale deal.

In Maharashtra , 268 Died Of Swine Flu in 10 Months: Minister

There are around 2,300 people infected with swine flu in Maharashtra, the state's health minister said

MUMBAI

The Maharashtra government Thursday said that 268 people had died due to swine flu in the state between January and October this year and 32 people were on ventilator support.

The state Health department Thursday also released guidelines for the treatment of swine flu patients.
"Maharashtra is the first state to formulate guidelines for treatment in such a way. These guidelines, according to which swine flu patients should be treated, will be sent to all government and private hospitals in the state," Health Minister Deepak Sawant said Thursday.

Mr Sawant had Thursday convened a meeting of the Diseases Control Committee due to the increasing number of swine flu cases in other areas of the state including Nashik, Pune and Satara.

"Considering the growing prevalence of swine flu, the state government has taken serious note of it and has announced guidelines for treatment of critical patients," the minister said, adding that the guidelines lay emphasis on how to treat patients in the intensive care unit (ICU).

"These guidelines have been prepared by the Expert Doctors Committee and will be distributed to private and civic hospitals, and members of Indian Medical Association," the minister said.

Mr Sawant said doctors should make changes in the guidelines depending on the condition of each patient.

There are around 2,300 people infected with swine flu in the state, he said.
"This year, 60 per cent of the swine flu patients hail from rural areas. Swine flu has killed patients in the 41-50 year age group," he informed.

He said that hospitals have been instructed to administer Tamiflu to patients suffering from cold and fever in case their condition does not improve in 24 hours despite medication.

"Tamiflu pill is not known to affect adversely. Private doctors should use it," he said. The minister also informed that 29 deaths have been reported so far from dengue.

New-look China rich help drive billionaire wealth to $8.9 trillion: Report

china-agencies
"China's billionaire entrepreneurs are leading their country's economic transformation, and by extension that of the rest of Asia," the report said.

The world's billionaires saw their collective wealth rise 19 percent to $8.9 trillion in 2017, led by growth in China, which minted two new billionaires every week, according to a new report.

A total of 199 billionaires were created over the year globally, with nearly a third gaining their wealth through some form of innovation, while the rest did so by scaling up businesses in the Asia-Pacific region, UBS and consultants PwC said.

Nowhere was this more visible than China, they said in the 2018 edition of their Billionaires Insights Report, with China's billionaires rising to 373 from 318 with joint wealth of $1.12 trillion, up 39 percent.

"China's billionaire entrepreneurs are leading their country's economic transformation, and by extension that of the rest of Asia," the report said.

"Over little more than 10 years, they have created some of the world's largest companies, raised living standards and made fortunes at an unprecedented pace."

UBS, whose wealth management arm manages around $2.5 trillion in assets, and PwC said there were already more billionaires in Asia than in the United States and they were on course to be wealthier than their U.S. peers within three years.

"A new cohort of Chinese entrepreneurs is challenging Silicon Valley, amid rising tensions over trade and intellectual property. They are developing new business models, seizing opportunities, moving rapidly between business sectors."

China produced 50 so-called 'unicorns' - companies with a valuation of at least $1 billion - from 2016 to 2018, slightly behind the 62 produced in the United States, the report said.

Rapid urbanisation and productivity growth would help the young entrepreneurs at the forefront of China's wealth creation continue to reach the ranks of the billionaires in the coming years, it said.

Windies 8/0 after 1 over. Shardul Thakur to bowl from the other end, he will bowl his first ball to the left-handed Kieran Powell.

The WINDIES have won the toss and elected to bat first in the 2nd Test of the Paytm Test series here at the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Hyderabad.#WindiesCricket #ItsOurGame

08:55 IST: India lead the two-match Test series 1-0. The Windies will look to salvage some pride in the Hyderabad Test.

08:50 IST: Listen again to what Team India captain Virat Kohli had to say during the pre-match press conference. We are 10 minutes away from the toss.

08:30 IST: Hello and welcome to the live commentary from the Day 1 of the second Test between India and West Indies.

In 2011, India dominated the West Indies 2-0 in a one-sided series before crashing to a 0-4 defeat against Australia Down Under. Similarly, in 2013 when India won both Test matches well inside three days, the next tour of South Africa didn't pan out well as they lost the series. It is just an indicator that the West Indies Test teams over the years have not been competitive enough to challenge the Indian team at home. The focus, once again, will be on Indian skipper Virat Kohli who scored 139 off 230 balls. And not to forget the 18-year-old Prithvi Shaw, who expectedly hogged the limelight with a smashing ton on debut.

However, the only area of concern for India will be vice-captain Ajinkya Rahane's form. Rahane has gone without a Test hundred for nearly 14 months (last hundred came against Sri Lanka in August 2017). Shardul Thakur continues to be the 12th man as a 2-0 series win is paramount for the home team at this point of time. Mohammed Shami and Umesh Yadav will also like to use this opportunity well as they are unlikely to feature in the ODI series. For the Windies, the aim will to at least put up some fight unlike the Rajkot game where they didn't even last 100 overs across both innings.

MyLiveMint: Prithvi Shaw Makes History, Becomes Youngest Indian To Score Test Century On Debut
Prithvi Shaw became the youngest Indian to score a Test century on debut

Prithvi Shaw made history on Thursday by becoming the youngest Indian to score a Test century on debut. Shaw, at 18 years and 329 days, reached the historic three-figure mark off just 99 balls against the Windies on Day 1 of the opening Test at the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Rajkot. The previous record for the youngest half-centurion for India on debut was held by Abbas Ali Baig, who at the age of 20 years 131 days, scored a half-century against England in Manchester in 1959.

Meanwhile, Prithvi is also the third-fastest centurion on Test debut. India's southpaw Shikhar Dhawan remains the fastest in this club with an 85-ball hundred against Australia in 2013 at the IS Bindra Stadium, Mohali. And West Indian cricketer Dwayne Smith (93 deliveries) pulled off the same feat against South Africa in Cape Town in 2004.
Prithvi, however, has also become the seventh-youngest Test centurion. Back in 2001, Bangladesh's Mohammad Ashraful (17 years, 61 days) became the youngest ever to achieve this feat against Sri Lanka in Colombo. Next on the list is Pakistan's Mushtaq Mohammad (17 years, 78 days), who pulled this off back in 1961 against India in Delhi. Sachin Tendulkar (17 years, 78 days), Zimbabwe's Hamilton Masakadza (17 years, 352 days), Pakistan's Imran Nazir (18 years, 154 days) and Saleem Malik (18 years, 323 days) are the rest of the batsmen in this elite club.
India captain Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch with a green tinge. India got off to a nightmare start, losing KL Rahul for a duck in the very first over of the match. However, Shaw and Cheteshwar Pujara made sure there were no more trouble for India with the duo batting brilliantly to take India to 133 for one at lunch on Day 1.
