Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook is an innovator in privacy

Mark Zuckerberg says Facebook is an innovator in privacy
Mark Zuckerberg

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Mark Zuckerberg held a discussion with Harvard Law Professor Jonathan Zittrain.
  • The discussion with Jonathan Zittrain was a part of Mark Zuckerberg’s new year resolution.
  • During the discussion, Mark Zuckerberg talked about data privacy and privacy policies.
Past one year has been a tough one for Facebook. The company has been a subject of numerous privacy scandal starting from the Cambridge Analytica controversy last year to the controversy regarding the privacy of its closed health groups earlier this week. Despite being in the centre of privacy storm, social media giant's CEO and co-founder Mark Zuckerberg believes that Facebook has been one of the leading innovators in privacy.
Zuckerberg, in a discussion with the Harvard Law Professor Jonathan Zittrain, said that the social media giant's position as an innovator in the area of privacy wasn't a mainstream view. "Thinking about Facebook as an innovator in privacy is certainly not the mainstream view," the Facebook said in the discussion, as reported by CNBC.
"But going back to the very first thing that we did, making it so Harvard students could communicate in a way that they had some confidence that their content and information would be shared with only people within that community, there was no way that people had to communicate stuff at that scale but not have it either be just completely public or just as small as it had been before," he added.
The discussion with Zittrain was the first in the series of discussions that Zuckerberg promised to have in the course of the year as a part of his new year's resolution.
Apart from talking about data privacy, Zuckerberg also talked about the popularity of private chats. During his discussion with the Harvard Law professor, he said that private chats using features like Stories - that disappear after 24 hours-was gaining popularity and that people around the globe were increasingly using these features to send messages to their friends and family.
Notably, Zuckerberg's comments about privacy on Facebook's platform didn't end right there. During the course of his discussion, which is shared on his Facebook profile, the Facebook founder stressed on the fact that discussions around privacy were also centered around policy. "When we talk about privacy, I think a lot of the questions are often about privacy policies and legal or policy type things," Zuckerberg told Zittrain.
"But I actually think there is another element of this that's really fundamental, which is that people want tools that give them new contexts to communicate and that's also fundamentally about giving people power through privacy, not just not violating privacy," he added.

Israeli PM’s son gets temporary ban on Facebook for anti-Muslim posts

Yair Netanyahu blasted the website on Sunday for removing an earlier post in which he called for "avenging the deaths" of two Israeli soldiers killed last week by Palestinian gunmen and calling for the expulsion of Palestinians.

Facebook blocked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Yair for 24 hours after he wrote a post criticizing the social media platform as “thought police” and sharing previously banned content.

Yair Netanyahu blasted the website on Sunday for removing an earlier post in which he called for “avenging the deaths” of two Israeli soldiers killed last week by Palestinian gunmen and calling for the expulsion of Palestinians. He shared a screenshot of the earlier post in violation of Facebook’s community rules.

Facebook deleted a post by Netanyahu last week in which he said he would “prefer” if “All the Muslims leave the land of Israel.”

Facebook had no immediate comment. Netanyahu’s son has drawn media criticism for crude social media posts and a life of excess at public expense.

They said it would never sell, with its six-minute playing time, operatic passages and lyrics about Galileo and Scaramouche, but the Queen song “Bohemian Rhapsody” on Monday became the most streamed song from the 20th century.

Boosted by the new movie “Bohemian Rhapsody,” the 1975 single and music video surpassed 1.6 billion streams globally, record company Universal Music Group said in a statement.

The song overtook the likes of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” and Guns N’ Roses’ “Sweet Child O’Mine,” and is now also the most streamed classic rock song of all time, Universal added.

The “Bohemian Rhapsody” film, starring Rami Malek as late Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, has brought the music of the British rock band to a new generation. Five weeks after its release, it has also become the highest grossing musical biography movie ever, with a global box office take of $600 million.

Malek was nominated for a Golden Globe last week for his performance and is widely expected to get an Oscar nomination in January.

Universal said it had been promoting the single across streaming platforms in recent weeks. It used all registered streams on global on-demand services including Spotify, Apple Music and Deezer as well as streams from official song/video streams on YouTube to determine that “Bohemian Rhapsody” was the most streamed song from the 20th century.

PATHANKOT

Six men have been detained in Punjab's Pathankot railway station amid reports by intelligence agencies that some terrorists are trying to carry out attacks in Delhi. The men were travelling in the Pooja Express from Jammu to Ajmer in Rajasthan, when security forces stopped the train at Pathankot late on Sunday and took them into custody for questioning, the Punjab police said.

A police team from Jammu and Kashmir along with intelligence officers are interrogating the suspects.
The men were planning to carry out terror attacks in the national capital and elsewhere, a police officer said, adding some weapons and explosives have been recovered from them.
The security forces are on alert in Pathankot and Gurdaspur in Punjab as terrorists have targeted these areas in the past.
An Indian Air Force base in Pathankot was attacked by terrorists in January 2016. Seven people were killed in the attack.
Before the attack on the air base, terrorists had carried out an attack on Dinanagar town in Gurdaspur district in July 2015. Three Pakistani terrorists had entered from the border. Six people, including the three terrorists, were killed in the attack.

Bengaluru: Infosys Ltd chief executive Salil Parekh is still two months away from completing one year in office, but the 54-year-old has already ironed out differences within the organization, restructured compensation for the benefit of employees, given the digital business the required urgency, appointed new leaders for key roles and bagged billion-dollar deals. Parekh comments on his journey of the past 10 months at Infosys. Edited excerpts.
You had a great job at Cap Gemini. What attracted you to Infosys, and that, too, at a time when the company was going through some turbulence?
Frankly, I am a little bit fortunate to have this role. Infosys has always been a pre-eminent company, especially in India, but even globally. So when the opportunity came, it was extremely attractive. To me, it was more of a privilege to have something like this. I am sure there are a lot of people who would want to have something like this as a part of their career. The board was kind enough, with Nandan (Nilekani) and Kiran (Mazumdar Shaw), offering me this opportunity. So, in my mind, there was not much of thinking, it was a great opportunity.
Ten months into the job, what are you most satisfied with?
It’s too short a period in terms of achieving. The way we have laid out our approach, it is really a three-year plan. The first year was essentially about focusing on what I call stability and, I think, we have achieved some of that. We have put in place some of the building blocks which will allow us to take our business to where we want to, and the strategic direction is fairly clear. We are starting to execute.
Last quarter, we had a very large number of big deal wins, the largest we have had in many quarters. We were well within the guidance we had given both on growth and on margin. We are still putting in the building blocks. But the real test is over the next 3-5 years, as we put all these things together and as it starts to hum in an efficient way.
You have done two acquisitions since you took over. Are you looking at more?
Absolutely. That is one large part of our strategy, going forward. Fortunately, we have a very strong balance sheet and very good cash generation. As we find things which make sense, we will look at buying.
Big-ticket acquisitions?
We have not been specific. We have not quantified internally, nor have we shared in the market whether it’s large or small. What I know is the M&A team has about 15 or so shortlisted companies and that they are keeping a watch on them.
With acquisitions, things are always available. It is a question of whether they are ready to sell, and does the price make sense. The point is about the cultural fit and then the strategic fit. So many things have to come in place together. It’s a little bit like getting married. There’s always people willing on every side, but a lot of things have to come together.
Any particular area or geography that you would look at?
In terms of the strategic fit, we will look at those five elements of digital, plus some of our core services, which are growing well. For example, our engineering services, which is growing very well today, and business process management, which is also growing well. So we are open to those, in addition to the digital ones. And among geographies, my preference is definitely the US, but we’ll also look at some continental European ones, especially markets such as Germany and Switzerland.
As the non-executive chairman, what role does Nandan play in the day-to-day business of the company? And, if you are looking at an acquisition, will you consult him?
The board looks at acquisitions. Therefore, Nandan is always available when I need him, but he doesn’t get involved in day-to-day matters. On an acquisition, if I need some views and advice, I would definitely consult him. But not for day-to-day deals or client work, delivery or people assignments. For those things he is not that involved. He has always said that if I want, he will always be available. He spends time on the campus as well, and he is quite engaged.
What did you make of Nandan’s remarks on Infosys becoming a boring company?
I agree that it is becoming a boring company, and I am hoping that it becomes even more boring.
What is your relationship with N.R. Narayana Murthy, and will you personally, and as part of the board, like him to come back on the board?
Board decisions are really about what Nandan and the board will decide. I have a very good equation, from my perspective, with Mr Murthy. We met socially a few times. I make it a point to try and reach out to him every few months, just to say hello. He has been kind enough to invite me to his home, have coffee or dinner. We have not talked about Infosys. He is deeply involved in so many areas, in NGOs, in the social sector, I am happy to learn and listen. But that’s clearly been the nature of our equation.
Would you like to have him on the board?
All board decisions are best handled by Nandan. So, I don’t have a particular view.
Do the senior-level exits of the last six months worry you?
If you see, I’ve appointed essentially a new set of leaders to run our industry verticals, which is how we go to the market. And they’re really extremely strong. They have been with the company 15, 20, 25 years and are very experienced both with the market and with how Infosys works. We have essentially five large industry verticals, and these are the people who are running those.
We’ve got a really strong bench of leadership talent within the company. This has been built over the years and, when I came in, we had the opportunity to put some of the people into these roles. In the future, as we move things, as we expand and look at new geographies, more of these roles will come about. My sense is we have a tremendous opportunity and options within, and now I’ve started to see quite a few people from outside who are calling me, or calling us, to join the leadership levels from some of our competitors.
So we have the opportunity to start bringing people from outside as well. So far, I’ve not done that, but over time it will be a mix--predominantly of internal candidates and occasionally some external as well.
At the beginning of the year you had lowered your operating margin targets to 22-24%. Is that a reflection of the strategy that you would like to go after growth even if it results in lower profit?
We essentially gave a margin guidance of 22-24% and, in the last quarter, we were at 23.7%. This quarter is pretty close to the high end of that guidance. The reason we did that is twofold. One, there is a lot of new work in the digital area which needs investments, and for us to scale up. To make those investments, we needed some room. And, this was one way for us to make some room. The second, on our employees, we had not handled all employee changes in terms of compensation appropriately.
So, I wanted to make sure we took this first year and got that addressed, and not have it be hanging over us in the future. So, it was much more of a catch up on the employee side. To me it made sense to reduce the margin, and the board was very supportive of that. We are extremely aggressive in the market. You have to be. We’ve expanded our sales capacity. In the last two quarters, we’ve increased the number of go-to-market sales individuals by 5% from a year-ago period.
Did Infosys get into the digital business a little late?
The opportunity in digital is so massive, that the more you can invest within reason, within the guidance of your profit and loss, the faster you will benefit from it. I’m not sure whether it was late or not, but we were not very explicit about it. And that’s one of the things we’ve done. We’re extremely explicit now, we have a clear definition, and it is part of what we announce every quarter. So, internally and externally, people know we are focused on it.
Is there stability in the company?
I think so. But the real test of that will be to go through this for the next 3, 5, 7 years. But really, I don’t see any of that in the way things are going today.
The leadership team is quite focused on the business, quite engaged with clients and with people development, which are the key elements of our business. The board seems to be quite involved and is very supporting on strategic direction, or if you look at acquisitions and things of that nature. So, I think it seems to be working in the way it should be working.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos ducks questions on Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future

Portugal have continued to flourish without Cristiano Ronaldo - their most capped player and record scorer - leading observers to wonder how much he is needed.

Portugal coach Fernando Santos avoided directly commenting on Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future on Monday, saying only that the 33-year-old was “with the team”.

Ronaldo has not been selected for Portugal’s squad since the World Cup, something which Santos initially said in September was a decision taken by mutual consent as the player needed a break following his move to Juventus from Real Madrid.

However, Portugal have continued to flourish without their most capped player and record scorer, leading observers to wonder how much he is needed.

The European champions have already won their Nations League group ahead of Italy with a game to spare and are set to host the semi-finals and final in June, a decision which has to be ratified by UEFA.

Ronaldo has posted messages of support to the team on Twitter and Instagram before and after matches, which Santos referred to on Monday –- but he would not go any further.

“If anyone has doubts about whether Ronaldo is with this team, they just have to look at his social media posts before and after the games,” said Santos. “Apart from that, I’m not going to go public with private conversations.”

The veteran coach clearly became tired of repeatedly being asked about Ronaldo.

“We keep going over old ground,” he said. “It’s not good for the national team, nor for the country. It’s taking away some credit from players who achieved qualification in brilliant fashion.

“We are talking about the best player in the world, but it’s important also to talk about the players of tomorrow. You can keep insisting but it’s getting difficult to keep answering the same question.”

Portugal host Poland in their final Group A3 game on Tuesday, although the match is effectively a friendly with the Poles already relegated.

Why you should get your kid a flip phone instead of a smartphone in 2018

Why you should get your kid a flip phone instead of a smartphone in 2018

WATCHWhy you should get your kid a flip phone instead of a smartphone in 2018

Becky Worley, a technology correspondent for ABC News and "Good Morning America," has been covering technology since 1998. She's also a mom living in Oakland, California, and, in this article, tackles screen time limits and apps that help parents.
Parents, we have a dilemma: you want to be able to communicate with your kids but you don’t want to fight with your kids all the time about overusing a smartphone. Manufacturers are realizing that some consumers actually want less from their phones and are coming out with new flip/feature phones with enhanced communication tools, long battery lives and durable designs.
Here are our top 10 reasons to get a flip phone instead of a smartphone for your child. Smartphone versus flip phone? Tweet us at GMA with your thoughts!
1. Communications and safety are the reasons most parents get a child their first phone. Flip phones are outstanding for making phone calls and while the numeric texting is laborious, simple logistics can be accomplished this way.
2. Your child will not get sucked into the vortex of games, social media and group-chat apps.
3. They are cheap – many start at $25 for the phone.Manufacturers like Nokia, LG and Kyocera, are the predominate manufacturers of flip phones (technically they are called feature phones because many of them don’t flip).
4. You don’t need an expensive data plan. Basic phone plans can be as little as $15 a month for talk and texting. These plans can be found on alternate carriers like Republic Wireless or Tracfone or add a prepaid line from your existing carrier.
5. Battery life. Some of the phones can keep a battery charge for a week.
6. They are almost indestructible. Shattering a screen on a feature phone is a lot harder than on a smartphone.
7. Less texting pics. Because the screens are smaller and the cameras are lower resolution, texting pictures is less appealing.
8. Basic app access. Newer phones like the Nokia 8110 can work with basic apps from the KaiOS app store. The two apps that get my attention are the Google Voice speech-to-text-app that could help dictating texts and the Google Maps directions app. (Note: Even basic feature phones without these apps have browser access so in a pinch you could search for directions through the internet).
9. GPS-tracking. Flip phones can be GPS-tracked via add-on family mapping features from some carriers.
10. Peace of mind. You can communicate with your child but you don’t have to open the Pandora’s box of a device we adults are having trouble handling responsibly.

ICC Rankings: Virat Kohli Achieves Rare Landmark, Surpasses Brian Lara
India captain Virat Kohli has been consistent in the South Africa tour
India captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday became the second batsman to cross 900-point mark in both Tests and ODIs. Kohli's prolific run with the bat has helped him attain the rare feat in the latest update in the ICC ODI Player Rankings, which also saw Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan and India pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah take the joint-top position among bowlers. Kohli has thus moved ahead of Brian Lara in the all-timers' list, having also overtaken him in the all-timers' Test list last month. Kohli is now seventh in the ODI list of all-time rankings that is led by Vivian Richards with 935 points and the India captain is now a good 22 points clear of Sachin Tendulkar, whose ODI career high of 887 points came against Zimbabwe in January 1998. Kohli's aggregate is the best since Brian Lara reached 911 points in March 1993.

Kohli has also become only the second batsman after South Africa's AB de Villiers to attain the 900-point mark concurrently in both forms of the game and one among only five to have crossed 900 points in both forms of the game as he consolidated his top position with 558 runs in the 5-1 series win over South Africa, during which he slammed three centuries.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who aggregated 323 runs in the South Africa series, is another notable gainer in the latest rankings even as a clutch of Indian bowlers made rapid strides in the latest rankings, including the wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

Leg-spinner Chahal has moved up eight slots to the 21st position with 16 wickets in the South Africa series while Chinaman bowler Yadav's 17 scalps have helped him move up 15 positions to take the 47th position. Bumrah's eight wickets have lifted him two places to take the joint-first position.

Rashid has joined Bumrah at the top with 16 wickets in the series against Zimbabwe which Afghanistan won 4-1 to become the youngest to attain top ranking. His 51 runs in two innings in the series, including a brisk 43 in the final match in Sharjah on Monday, has also helped him break into the top-five in the list of all-rounders while he has also moved up 11 slots to take 114th place among batsmen.

NEW DELHI:

Facebook-owned WhatsApp on Tuesday announced that it has selected 20 research teams worldwide - including experts from India and those of Indian origin -- who will work towards how misinformation spreads and what additional steps the mobile messaging platform could take to curb fake news.

Shakuntala Banaji from London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Anushi Agrawal and Nihal Passanha from Bengaluru-based media and arts collective "Maraa" and Ramnath Bhat from LSE have been selected for the paper titled "WhatsApp Vigilantes? WhatsApp messages and mob violence in India".

The research examines the ways in which WhatsApp users understand and find solutions to the spate of "WhatsApp lynchings" that have killed over 30 people so far.

The centre has also directed WhatsApp to take necessary remedial measures to prevent proliferation of fake and, at times, motivated/sensational messages on its platform.

Among others selected were Vineet Kumar from Ranchi-headquartered Cyber Peace Foundation (principal investigator), Amrita Choudhary, President of the Delhi-based non-profit Cyber Cafe Association of India (CCAOI) and Anand Raje from Cyber Peace Foundation.

They will work as a team on the paper titled "Digital literacy and impact of misinformation on emerging digital societies".

PN Vasanti from Centre for Media Studies in New Delhi will work with S Shyam Sundar, The Pennsylvania State University (Principal Investigator) to examine the role of content modality in vulnerability to misinformation, under the topic titled "Seeing is Believing: Is Video Modality More Powerful in Spreading Fake News?"

WhatsApp had issued a call for papers in July this year and received proposals from over 600 research teams around the world.

“Each of the 20 research teams will receive up to $50,000 for their project (for a total of $1 million)," WhatsApp said in a statement.

Lipika Kamra from OP Jindal Global University and Philippa Williams from the Queen Mary University of London (Principal Investigator) will examine the role of WhatsApp in everyday political conversations in India, in the context of India's social media ecosystem.

According to Mrinalini Rao, lead researcher at WhatsApp, the platform cares deeply about the safety of its over 1.5 billion monthly active users globally and over 200 million users in India.

"We appreciate the opportunity to learn from these international experts about how we can continue to help address the impact of misinformation," Ms Rao said.

"These studies will help us build upon recent changes we have made within WhatsApp and support broad education campaigns to help keep people safe," she added.

The recipients are from countries including Brazil, India, Indonesia, Israel, Mexico, Netherlands, Nigeria, Singapore, Spain, the UK and US.

WhatsApp said it is hosting them in California this week so they can hear from product leaders about how it builds its product.

"Given the nature of private messaging - where 90 per cent of the messages sent are between two people and group sizes are strictly limited - our focus remains on educating and empowering users and proactively tackling abuse," said the company.

WhatsApp recently implemented a "forward label" to inform users when they received a message that was not originally written by their friend or loved one. To tackle abuse, WhatApp has also set a limit on how many forwards can be sent.

In India, WhatsApp has partnered with the Digital Empowerment Foundation to train community leaders in several states on how to address misinformation.

"We are also running ads in several languages -- in print, online, and on over 100 radio stations -- amounting to the largest public education campaign on misinformation anywhere in the world," the company noted.

Sayan Banerjee from University of Essex, Srinjoy Bose from University of New South Wales and Robert A. Johns from University of Essex will study "Misinformation in Diverse Societies, Political Behaviour & Good Governance".

Santosh Vijaykumar from Northumbria University, Arun Nair from Health Systems Research India Initiative and Venkat Chilukuri, Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology are part of the team that will study "Misinformation Vulnerabilities among Elderly during Disease Outbreaks".

LOS ANGELES (REUTERS) - Comic book superhero creator Stan Lee, who died on Monday, got a superstar send off from Hollywood, where he was celebrated for creations like Spider-Man, Black Panther and the Hulk that made the careers of actors and directors alike.

Following is a list of reactions on social media and by statement:

"I owe it all to you," "Iron Man" actor Robert Downey Jr.

"No one has had more of an impact on my career and everything we do at Marvel Studios than Stan Lee. Stan leaves an extraordinary legacy that will outlive us all," Kevin Feige, President of Marvel Studios.

"Damn... RIP Stan. Thanks for everything," "Deadpool" actor Ryan Reynolds.

"For decades he provided both young and old with adventure, escape, comfort, confidence, inspiration, strength, friendship and joy. He exuded love and kindness and will leave an indelible mark on so, so, so many lives. Excelsior!!," "Captain America" actor Chris Evans.

"I'm proud to have been a small part of his legacy and .... to have helped bring one of his characters to life," "Wolverine" actor Hugh Jackman.

"Thank you for making my childhood, teen years and adulthood so fun, especially during darker days," singer Josh Groban.

"Thank you Stan Lee for making people who feel different realize they are special," actor Seth Rogen.

"Rest In Peace, Mr. Lee. Thanks for everything," "Supergirl" actress Nicole Maines.

"Stan Lee was as extraordinary as the characters he created. A superhero in his own right to Marvel fans around the world, Stan had the power to inspire, to entertain, and to connect. The scale of his imagination was only exceeded by the size of his heart," Bob Iger, Chairman and CEO, The Walt Disney Company.

"Original and genius are two very overused words in the world today, but Stan was both. Add irrepressible and irreplaceable, and you begin to describe the man. We have all lost a true superhero," Tim Rothman, chairman of Sony Pictures.

"The legacy of Stan Lee, through his creative genius and his universes of characters, will continue to reach the world of true believers for generations to come. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the fans of not only his work, but of him, as a friend who made the world a better place," Shane Duffy, chief executive of Lee's POW! Entertainment.

Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan's big Diwali release Thugs Of Hindostan might have not impressed the critics, but the cine-goers have made the film a blockbuster at the theatres. In just a day, Thugs Of Hindostan earned over Rs. 50 crore and with this, it now stands on #1 on the list of top five opening day business of films in 2018. Ranbir Kapoor's Sanju previously headlined the list. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh reports that Thugs Of Hindostan collected Rs. 50.75 crore and adding the business of its Tamil and Telugu releases, the current total comes to Rs. 52.25 crore. (Whoa!).

"Thugs Of Hindostan smashes all records (Hindi films) as it breaches Rs. 50 crore on Day 1. Sets new benchmarks in some circuits. Big holiday (Diwali) + tremendous hype + massive screen count help put up a sensational total," tweeted Mr Adarsh.

Here's the box office report of Thugs Of Hindostan.
Thugs Of Hindostan's earning is so far the highest for any Diwali release, for any Yash Raj Film and also for a Hindi film.
Taran Adarsh gave a detailed explanation of the records Thugs Of Hindostan now holds. He also added that the 'real test' for the film begins from Friday and it will have to 'maintain the pace over the weekend and weekdays too.'

Thugs Of Hindostan, also starring Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh, released to poor reviews. In his review for NDTV, film critic Saibal Chatterjee gave Thugs Of Hindostan 2.5 stars out of 5. "Big, bloated, bombastic, Thugs Of Hindostan is a period saga that banks solely upon action and spectacle for impact. It might entertain large swathes of the audience, but it is ultimately too tacky and unconvincing to lay legitimate claims to being India's answer to Pirates of the Caribbean. It isn't even a poor copy," he wrote.

Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan's Thugs Of Hindostan is directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya.
