HIGHLIGHTS

  • Chandrayaan-2 was launched on July 22 from Sriharikota
  • Chandrayaan-2 will land a rover on the Moon on September 6
  • Chandrayaan-2 will study the presence of water on the Moon
Chandrayaan-2, which is currently orbiting the Moon, has mapped the lunar surface and has clicked images showing several impact craters. Impact craters are structures formed when extraterrestrial objects, such as asteroids or meteoroids, crash into planets or satellites.
Chandrayaan-2 has mapped the Moon's northern areas and has captured photos of the Jackson Crater, Mitra Crater, Sommerfeld Crater and Rozhdestvenskiy Crater, among others. The photos were shot from an altitude of around 4,375 kilometres above lunar surface.
Chandrayaan-2 is currently flying around the Moon in an elliptical orbit of 118 kms x 4412 kms -- the closest Chandrayaan-2 comes to the Moon while on this orbit is 118 kms while the farthest is 4412 kms.

Over the next few days, Chandrayaan-2 will perform a series of manoeuvres to bring itself closer and closer to the Moon. On September 2, the lander Vikram will separate from the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft and get into an orbit of its own around the Moon.
Then finally on September 6, Vikram will begin a 15-minute powered descent, at the end of which it will land near the south pole of the Moon and set free the six-wheeled rover Pragyaan that will roam the lunar surface for around 14 Earth days.
WHAT MAKES CHANDRAYAAN-2 SO SPECIAL?
Chandrayaan-2 will make India only the fourth country in the world to land a rover on the Moon and the only country in the world to do perform a 'soft landing' near the south pole of the Moon.
The southern polar region of the Moon has not received sunlight for billions of years, increasing the possibility of finding water under the surface of the Moon.
Finding water is one the Chandrayaan-2 mission's main goals. The lunar rover will perform surface and sub-surface experiments to determine the extent of water presence on the Moon.
Chandrayaan-2's predecessor, Chandrayaan-1, had made history in 2008 by confirming the presence of water on the Moon. Chandrayaan-2 will aim to further Chandrayaan-1's findings.
LUNAR SURFACE
Meanwhile, with days to go for its D-Day, Chandrayaan-2 is orbiting the Moon taking photos of the dimpled satellite.
In the latest photos released by the Indian Space Research Organisation, Chandrayaan-2 has captured images of the Jackson and Mitra craters, located in the northern hemisphere of the far side of the Moon. The Mitra crater is named after Indian physicist Professor Sisir Kumar Mitra.

The other impact craters that Chandrayaan-2 has photographed are the Sommerfeld, named after the German physicist, Dr. Arnold Sommerfeld, and Kirkwood, named after American astronomer Daniel Kirkwood. Both these craters are located in the farside northern latitudes of the Moon.
Chandrayaan-2 has also photographed the lunar north polar region, which Isro says is one of the coldest spots in the Solar System.

Rate of literacy among women must be equal to male literacy: Former President Pranab Mukherjee
Former President Pranab Mukherjee on Monday called for bridging the gender gap in literacy and said educating a woman tantamounts to educate the entire family. If the mother is educated in a household, essential healthcare problems like child mortality can be addressed, Mukherjee said at a programme here.
According to the 2011 Census, "male literacy is 80.2 per cent in the country and in case of women, it is 60 per cent," he said. This shows that women trail behind men in literacy and this 20 per cent gap should be bridged, the former President said.

Need to educate woman:

"The rate of literacy among women must be equal to male literacy. If you educate a man, you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a family," the Bharat Ratna recipient said in his speech.
"I reiterate that if women are educated, they will take care of health issues and bring basic fundamental changes in healthcare in education and a new culture will be developed among youngsters," Mukherjee said.
India has a pluralistic society and, despite that, Indians are united, he said.
"India has one goal, one Constitution, one flag and this plurality will be strengthened by the mothers, sisters and daughters who will teach the new generation," he said.
Girls from several city schools attended the 'Beti Padhao Abhiyaan' programme organised by a corporate group.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sumit Nagal became the first Indian player to take the first set during his first round defeat to 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer
  • Nagal is only the fourth player after Peter Wessels, Jose Acasuso and Frances Tiafoe to take the opening set off Roger Federer
  • Federer had faced two Indians and defeated both Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Devvarman in straight sets in three meetings
Former junior Wimbledon champion Sumit Nagal became the first Indian player to take the first set during his first round defeat to 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.
Remarkably, Nagal is only the fourth player after Peter Wessels, Jose Acasuso and Frances Tiafoe to take the opening set off Roger Federer at the US Open. Before this, Federer had faced two Indians and defeated both Rohan Bopanna and Somdev Devvarman in straight sets in three meetings.
The first set was a closely fought affair as both Federer and Nagal went back and forth and at one stage the set was tied at 4-4. It was then that Nagal won games continuously, and the 22-year old won the first set 6-4.
Indian qualifier put up with a valiant fight against his idol Roger Federer as he forced the Swiss legend to make 19 unforced errors in the first set. On the other hand, Nagal was dominating the rallies and capitalised on the poor start from Roger Federer to put immense pressure on the Swiss great.
However, Nagal could not keep to the momentum as Federer bounced back to his best and won 2nd, 3rd and 4th set to knock the Indian qualifier out 4-6, 1-6, 2-6, 4-6.
World number 190 Nagal, who has never earned a tour-level victory and only qualified for the year’s final Grand Slam last week, came out swinging and even put a rare look of incredulity on the faces of those inside third seed Federer’s box.
The 22-year-old Indian used impressive court coverage and sent heavily-spinning shots over the net during his dream start but his legs started to look more wobbly as the match wore and Federer righted the ship.

  • PM Modi answered questions posed by reporters in Hindi.
  • The duo held hands while the room burst into laughter.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his close friend US President Donald Trump shared a laugh as the duo addressed the media at the sidelines of the G7 Summit in France.
The two leaders held 40-minute discussions in Biarritz, the French town which is hosting the meeting of the world's most industrialised nations.
The two leaders exchanged a warm handshake and spoke to the media. While Trump obviously spoke in English, PM Modi chose to speak at the press meet in Hindi which was translated into English for the audience.
Prime Minister Modi asked reporters to let the leaders talk in privacy
In the middle PM Modi said in Hindi, "Mujhe lagta hai hum dono ko baat karne dijiye, hum dono baat karte rahenge. Jab zarurat padegi hum apko zaroor jaankari pohchaenge [I think you should let the two of us talk, we will keep talking. When the need arises, we will apprise of you what transpired]."
Pat came the reply from Donald Trump, "He actually speaks very good English, he just doesn't want to talk right now!"
Trump's remark sent both leaders into peals of laughter. The audience also burst out laughing.

Amused by what his American friend had said, PM Modi held Trump's hand as you do with any other friend.
On his part, Trump said he and Modi spoke last night about Kashmir and he feels that both India and Pakistan can resolve it.
Their meeting came against the backdrop of the Indian government revoking the special status to Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcating the state into two Union Territories on August 5

Vidya Balan shares nightmarish experience with Tamil producer: I felt ugly and like sh*t

Vidya Balan shares nightmarish experience with Tamil producer: I felt ugly and like sh*t
Vidya Balan reveals her worst experience down South.
Vidya Balan reveals her worst experience down South.
Vidya Balan's journey in Bollywood has been nothing less than a roller-coaster. Though she tasted success with her 2005 film Parineeta, she had several hits and misses along the way till Tumhari Sulu in 2017. Apart from Bollywood, the actress has tried her hand in films down South as well.
However, in an interview to an entertainment portal, Vidya revealed that the experience down South was not entirely rosy. "There were a lot of rejections down South. There were a lot of Malayalam films, but I was replaced in each of them. There was a Tamil film I was doing and I was thrown out of the film...I remember my parents had come with me because they were so worried about me...I had really begun to fade. We went to the producers office. The producer showed us the clippings from the film and he said, 'Just look at her, does she look like a heroine. He said 'I was not in favour of taking her at all, it was the director who insisted."
Vidya added, "They already had replaced me and my father after knowing that, called up the producer asking if they can meet because he wanted to know what was going wrong. They wanted to know what was the problem."
Vidya said that she had a difficult time dealing with the rejection. "I felt ugly...I felt like sh*t for months and I don't think I looked at myself in the mirror... I didn't like what I saw because I thought I was ugly...For the longest time, I did not forgive that man, but today, thanks to that I realized that I have to love and accept myself the way I am."
Sharing another nightmarish experience, Vidya said, "There was another Tamil film that was locked on the phone and it was not organised in the way that they are today...I didn't know any better so I was like ok and committed to doing the film. I land up in Chennai and I shot with him for a day and really felt uncomfortable with the kind of humour that was in the film. I left the film and then they sent me a legal notice."
Vidya Balan was last seen in the film Mission Mangal with Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha, Nithya Menen, Taapsee Pannu and Kirti Kulhari. The film crossed Rs 100 crore.

Tensions between India and Pakistan spiked after India abrogated provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution, evoking strong reactions from Pakistan. (Photo: Twitter/Reuters)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • PM Modi said India will not bother any other nation with its bilateral issue
  • Even US President Donald Trump agreed India and Pakistan will resolve Kashmir dispute bilaterally
  • In Pakistan, Imran Khan said he will escalate Kashmir issue to global level
India's diplomatic manoeuvring with the US led to President Donald Trump admitting that Kashmir is a "bilateral" issue between India and Pakistan.
Even ahead of the bilateral meeting between the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Donald Trump, the two leaders discussed the issue of Kashmir over the leadership dinner in the scenic beach city of Biarritz in France on Sunday ahead of the G7 summit-level meeting.
Meanwhile, Pakistani PM Imran Khan addressed his country on the Kashmir situation and said that he will raise the issue at every international forum, including at the UN General Assembly.
Here is what transpired in the international world on Kashmir:
  • At G7 Summit, US President Donald Trump told the media, "We spoke last night about Kashmir, Prime Minister [Modi] really feels he has it under control. They speak with Pakistan and I'm sure that they will be able to do something that will be very good."
  • Sitting beside Trump, PM Modi reiterated India's stance on Kashmir and in a subtle but stern way said that India didn't "want to trouble any third country".
  • Without directly referring to the Kashmir issue, PM Modi said, "There are many issues with Pakistan are bilateral, We don't bother other countries about these issues. We can find solutions through discussions."
  • "India and Pakistan were together before 1947 and I'm confident that we can discuss our problems and solve them together," PM Modi added during the media interaction.
  • An hour or so after PM Modi and Trump met, Pakistan PM Imran Khan issued a nuclear threat to India.
  • Calling India's decision on Kashmir a "historic blunder", Imran Khan said, "if there is a war, then the world should remember that both India and Pakistan are nuclear powers. And in case of war, no one will win, but the world will be responsible as the effects of war will be felt by everyone."
The address by Pakistan's PM will not go down well in the international community.

In all its international conversations, India has reiterated its position with no opposition from any quarter.
The issue of Kashmir did not come up during talks with UK PM Boris Johnsons said Indian Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale.
On the nuclear threat, Vivek Katju, former secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, said, "It is standard Paksitani tactic. What the Pakistanis have failed to do is translate this engagement into mediation. There is a fundamental distinction between engagement and mediation and the latter is what Pakistan has always failed to achieve."
While Pakistan claimed it succeeded in internationalising the issue of Kashmir, Christine Fair, Strategic Affairs Expert said, "There is never going to be mediation in Kashmir whether Trump says it or not. That is the reality..."

And while the current US administration is transactional in nature and Washington needs Pakistan in the US, it also needs India on the economic and strategic sphere.
Bharat Karnad, a research professor of the Centre for Policy Research said, "Trump is impulsive. Whatever he has said today, he might overturn tomorrow. He is a transactional kind of person and he could go to any length to realise his goals."

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Bolsonaro mocked the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron in a Facebook post
  • Macron hit back saying Brazilian women must be ashamed of Bolsonaro
  • Brazil was angered after Macron posted about the Amazon forest fires
Brazilian women are probably ashamed of President Jair Bolsonaro, French President Emmanuel Macron said on Monday, hitting back after the Brazilian leader mocked Macron's wife on Facebook.
The leaders have been feuding in recent weeks, with Macron blaming Bolsonaro for fires in the Amazon and accusing him of lying about climate change policy.
Bolsonaro responded on Sunday to a Facebook post that compared the looks of his wife Michelle, 37, with Macron's 66-year-old wife Brigitte.
"Do not humiliate the man hahahah," Bolsonaro wrote, in a comment widely criticised as sexist.
Asked about the incident at a news conference in Biarritz where G7 leaders are gathered for a summit, Macron said the comments were "extremely disrespectful" to his wife.
"It's sad, it's sad first of all for him and for Brazilians," Macron said. "Brazilian women are probably feeling ashamed of their president."
"Since I have a lot of esteem and respect for the people of Brazil, I hope they will very soon have a president who is up to the job," Macron added.
Later on Monday, Bolsonaro denounced Macron's plan for an international alliance to protect the Amazon, saying on Twitter that it would treat Brazil like a colony.
Brazil was angered after Macron, in the run up to the G7 summit, tweeted a photo of the burning Amazon forest, writing: "Our house is burning. Literally." Macron said he had been lied to by Bolsonaro over his commitments to fighting climate change.
In July, Bolsonaro cancelled a meeting with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian - getting a haircut instead.
Since taking office in January, Bolsonaro has railed against the enforcement of environmental regulations in Brazil and announced intentions to develop the Amazon region, where deforestation of the world's largest rainforest by loggers, ranchers and speculators has surged this year.

Madhu Mantena will be co-producing film based on Kashmir's last Hindu queen
The story of Kota Rani, the last Hindu queen who ruled over Kashmir, will be brought on the big screen soon. The film will be produced jointly by Reliance entertainment and Phantom Films. The 14th century queen of Kashmir was said to be an exceptionally beautiful woman who was also a great administrator and military strategist.
"It's a matter of great surprise that as Indians we don't know enough or at all about a personality like Kota Rani. It would be no exaggeration to compare her to Cleopatra and a lot of things that we are witnessing today are directly related to the story of Kota Rani," said Madhu Mantena who is co-producing the venture.
"Her life was extremely dramatic and she is perhaps one of the most able woman ruler that India produced. It would be a shame not to know about her," he added.
Sibashish Sarkar, Group CEO, Reliance Entertainment, shared that the primary aim is to make the remarkable story of Kota Rani reach as many people as possible.
"Her character has many shades but without a doubt she is one of the tallest female characters to have come out of our country. Paradoxically, very few of us know about her. We will be making this film at an ambitious scale," Sibashish said.

India is likely to discuss with Russia on the supply of critical components for its human space capsule that would carry Indian cosmonauts to space.
The two countries are expected to negotiate the contracts for the supply of crew seats, windows and spacesuits for India's human space mission named Gaganyaan, said Russian state-run space corporation Roscosmos.
According to Roscosmos, a top-level meeting between Russia and India is likely to be held during the Eastern Economic Forum from September 4 to 6 in Russia's Vladivostok.
The two countries will also discuss on cooperation in the sphere of piloted space flights, satellite navigation and engine technology, Roscosmos said in a statement after a meeting between its Director General Dmitry Rogozin and India's National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in Moscow on August 21.
According to Roscosmos, Rogozin and Doval took a favorable view of the work according to the contract between Glavkosmos and the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to select and train four Indian cosmonauts at the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Centre.
The two sides also discussed possible Indian-crewed flight carrier rocket aerodynamic tests, as well as piloted vehicle and crew rescue system.
An agreement is planned to be reached by the end of August, Roscosmos said. India's first human space mission Gaganyaan is set for launch in 2022.

Israeli aircraft carried out multiple strikes on Hamas military positions early Monday in the Gaza Strip after three rockets were launched from the territory into southern Israel.
The military said the airstrikes included one on the office of a Hamas commander in the northern Gaza Strip. There were no reports of casualties.
Late on Sunday, the army said two rockets fired from Gaza were intercepted by Israel's missile defence system, but did not disclose what happened to the third.
The fire from Gaza comes after Israel staged airstrikes in Syria on Saturday against what it said were Iranian drones being readied to attack Israel. Two alleged Israeli drones also crashed in Lebanon's capital overnight.
It was not immediately clear who fired the rockets from Gaza. Palestinian militants have stepped up launches in recent days, frustrated by the Israeli-Egyptian blockade of Gaza.
But Iran-backed militants in Gaza also fire rockets, and Sunday's launches could have been a response to the Israeli airstrikes in Syria.
