ICC CRICKET WORLD CUP 2019: SUNDAR PICHAI PREDICTS AN INDIA VS ENGLAND IN FINAL

The ICC World Cup is on, and the cricket fever is taking on everyone. India, by defeating South Africa and Australia, took a strong beginning. Their next match on Thursday, which was with New Zealand, sadly got washed out due to rain.  Meanwhile, fans and analysts are already presuming which two teams might be making it to the final day. And just like you and me, Google CEO Sundar Pichai is rooting for India in the World Cup final as well! Pichai was speaking at the India Ideas Summit of USIBC in Washington.

“It (ICC Cricket World Cup final match) should be (between) England and India. But, you know, Australia and New Zealand, these are all very, very good teams,” he said. Looks like after India, the English are his favourite!

He also shared how being a cricket fan, he tried to get used to Baseball. “When I first came here, I tried to kind of adapt to baseball. I have to say it was a bit challenging. In my first game, I was proud because I hit the ball on the back. It’s a really good shot in cricket. I was like, well look, what I did. But people didn’t appreciate it,” he added.

At the summit, Pichai was honoured with the Global Leadership Award and the audience included US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

“In cricket when you run, you always take your bat with you. So I also ran between the base with my bat. So eventually, I realised baseball was a bit difficult. I can adjust on many things, but I’m going to stick to cricket,” he further said. You clearly can't take cricket out of an Indian, can you?

Batting great Sachin Tendulkar has said MS Dhoni should be given the space to go out on his own terms while insisting that the India wicketkeeper-batsman has had a "special" career in limited-overs cricket.

Speculations were rife that MS Dhoni would hang up his boots from international cricket after India's World Cup 2019 campaign. India Today though confirmed that there is no official world on Dhoni retiring from the 50-over format of the game.

MS Dhoni, India's World Cup-winning former captain, was left devasted when he was run out in the 49th over of India's chase vs New Zealand in the World Cup 2019 semi-final in Manchester on Wednesday. For the umpteenth time in his career, Dhoni kept the hopes of India alive by helping the team recover from 92 for 6 in their chase of 240.

Dhoni hit a valiant fifty and stitched a 106-run stand for the 7th wicket with Ravindra Jadeja but it wasn't enough as New Zealand won the semi-final by 18 runs and knocked India out of the World Cup.

"Thank You MS Dhoni" became a social media trend minutes after Dhoni was agonisingly run out by a Martin Guptill throw in the 49th over. It is safe to say, MS Dhoni, 38, had played his last 50-over World Cup match on Wednesday.

MS Dhoni has had a special career: Sachin Tendulkar

Speaking to India Today, Sachin Tendulkar said: "That's his personal decision [end of 50-over career]. Everyone should give him that space and respect that. Every should respect what his contribution to India cricket rather than starting speculations. After having contributed so much, he should be the one taking that decision."

Tendulkar heaped rich praise on MS Dhoni, saying not many have been able to have a successfull career as the India wicketkeeper. The batting great opined India fans wouldn't have given up hopes as long as Dhoni was out in the middle in the World Cup semi-final vs New Zealand.

"How many guys can have a career like this? He has had a special career. The support and belief that people have in him is a reflection of his contribution. People still believed that he could go and finish the game. The game was not over till the time he was out there."

Meanwhile, India captain Virat Kohli confirmed that he has not been informed anything by MS Dhoni about the veteran's future. India topped the points table with 7 wins from 9 matches but, as Kohli pointed out, 45 minutes of poor cricket knocked them out of the World Cup.

England 1st country to win Cricket World Cup, Football World Cup and Rugby World Cup

England went onto to win their maiden World Cup title as the trophy sliced through New Zealand’s grasp in a World Cup final that will be remembered for ages.

With this win, England became the first country to win Cricket World Cup, Football World Cup and Rugby World Cup. England’s first success in major sports championships came in 1966 when they defeated West Germany 4-2 in the final to clinch their maiden and only Football World Cup.

England became world rugby champions after a 20-17 win over hosts Australia in the 2003 finals. Not only was it their first Rugby World Cup victory, but it was the country’s first World Cup since winning the 1966 FIFA (football) World Cup.

A tied 50-over total led the match into a super over finish but as luck would have it, the scored were tied in the super over also.

Chasing 16 in the Super Over, New Zealand managed 15 but England won because they scored more boundaries in the match and in the Super Over.

England’s superior boundary count 22 fours and two sixesto New Zealand’s 16 became the decisive moment in the World Cup final which was inarguably the most gripping in the tournament’s history.

Ben Stokes’s sheer brilliance with the willow earned him a place in the history of England Cricket as one of the greatest all-rounders of the country. Stokes smashed an unbeaten 84 to steer England’s chase of 242 against the Black Caps.

Also, England now are the World Champions in both Men’s and Women’s 50-over cricket. Heather Knight had led the women’s team to a historic title win on the same ground almost exactly two years ago.

The bowler, however, did not switch arms. While ambidextrous bowlers are getting a lot of attention, this first of its kind bowling action might take some time to be accepted. 

The video, which has got more than 15000 views, has the cricket fans on social media divided. Some think it was a legitimate delivery while others agree with the umpire.

The Anil Kumble-Virat Kohli spat has been a trending topic since the former tweeted his resignation as India coach highlighting his reasons for quitting the high-profile job - among them that Captain Kohli had "reservations" with his style. But with skipper Virat Kohli prepping for the series with the West Indies, his side of the story is yet to be heard. Sources have told NDTV that there were sharp differences and several reasons why to two were almost destined to fall apart. For one, they alleged, "Anil Kumble treated players like school kids."

The coach reportedly gave the players a "dressing-down" after the team lost the ICC Champions Trophy final to Pakistan at The Oval on June 18. The team members, who were feeling terrible about the loss in any case, felt that their coach was scolding them like children and not treating them like professionals, the sources said. The captain, they said, is very possessive about his team in the dressing room and he was upset at the way Kumble spoke to them.

Kumble stepped down as the head coach of the India cricket team on Tuesday and in soon tweeted a long letter, listing his reasons and the circumstances under which he had left the post. The Indian team was on its way to the West Indies at that moment and till now, there has been no response from Kohli on this. While the news of differences between the coach and captain had been doing the rounds for quite a long time, even the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was taken by surprise by reports that the two were not on talking terms for the 'last six months'.

Nevertheless, the rift was a very defined one and the sources also told NDTV that there were several reasons why to two were almost destined to fall apart.

Kumble wanted to bat first in the final

The source also said that the Indian skipper opted to field in the final but the coach wanted to bat first and put runs on the board. But we all know that Kohli's decision prevailed.

Control over the dressing room

The source elaborated that the two had major issues about dressing room control. The coach wanted players to follow his template -- of a regimented lifestyle -- which Kohli rejected because the current crop feels they multi-task.

Differences began during Australia series

According to the source, the differences first cropped up during the Australia series earlier this year when Kumble decided to field left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in place of the injured Kohli in the fourth and final Test at Dharamsala. It seems Kohli was not aware of Yadav's selection.

The Indian cricket team on Wednesday reached Port of Spain (Trinidad) for a limited-overs series against the West Indies. The first ODI is scheduled for June 23 (Friday).

The cricketing fraternity is still waiting to hear from Kohli on the issue, but the Indian captain has been silent so far.

10 Sri Lanka players, including the likes of Lasith Malinga and Angelo Mathews, have pulled out of the upcoming tour of Pakistan, citing security fears.

The decision was taken after a meeting organized by Sri Lanka Cricket with players of the national team on Monday, Sri Lanka Cricket said in a statement.

In 2009, a terrorist attack targeted a Sri Lankan cricket team bus in Lahore, in which several players were left injured. Since then, Pakistan has remained isolated as a destination for international cricket.

Following Sri Lankan players pulling out, an official source in the Pakistan Cricket Board had told news agency PTI that Pakistan would accept whatever team the Sri Lankan board sends.

India leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal stated that the team will comply with whatever decision the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) takes in its meeting on Friday.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) will be keeping a close eye on the BCCI meet involving Committee of Administrators (COA) when they deliberate to finalize India's position vis-a-vis ICC World Cup 2019.

Chahal reiterated his statement which he had made earlier this week when he called for a strict and a befitting reply to Pakistan for the thousands of lives that have been lost due to cross border terrorism.

"It's not in our hands, if BCCI says, we will play if they say no then we won't. I think it is high time, we need to take firm action. I am not saying all people there (Pakistan) are at fault but those who are responsible should be acted against," Chahal said ahead of the T20I series against Australia.

Calls have been growing louder in India to boycott the June 16 World Cup match against Pakistan in the wake of the Pulwama terror attack which resulted in the death of 40 CRPF jawans.

The BCCI had even thought about writing a letter to the ICC asking the cricket governing body to ban Pakistan from the World Cup. But even if such a move is made, the ICC is bound to reject it.

"There is absolutely no constitutional or contractual way this could happen. The ICC constitution allows members the right to participate in ICC events as long as they've qualified," a BCCI official told PTI.

A top BCCI source said even if a note is sent and the ICC agrees to put it out in front of member boards for a vote, India is unlikely to find any support from other nations.

"In case India writes to ICC for Pakistan's removal, then we have to build consensus first to move a resolution at it's Annual Board Meeting in April. We no longer enjoy majority in the ICC board right now. If this goes for floor test we are certain to lose," he said.

"Not only that, serious doubts will emerge on our chances to host 2021 Champions Trophy and 2023 World Cup," he added.

The call to boycott Pakistan has been made by some prominent voices such as senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and former captain and Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) President Sourav Ganguly.
