Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) President Mayawati has slammed the Congress over the Kashmir visit of opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, to take stock of the situation after the withdrawal of the special status of Jammu and Kashmir on August 5.
The BSP chief on Monday said the Kashmir visit only gave a chance for the BJP and Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik to politicise the issue.
As Mayawati reiterated her party's support to the abrogation of provisions of Article 370, the BSP chief said the Congress and other opposition leaders should have waited for the situation to normalise in the Valley. "Isn't the recent visit of the Congress and other opposition parties to Kashmir without permission act as a chance for the Centre and Jammu and Kashmir Governor to politicise the issue?" Mayawati asked in a series of tweets on Monday.
Saying it will take some time for the situation to normalise in Kashmir, Mayawati said it would have been appropriate for the Opposition to consider the consequences of their Valley visit in the present circumstances.
"It will take some time for the situation to become normal there [Kashmir]. It is better to wait a bit, which is also considered by the Honorable Court," Mayawati wrote.
A delegation of opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, which wanted to visit the Valley to take stock of the situation, was not allowed to leave the Srinagar airport on Saturday by the state administration and had to return to the national capital.
The visit was organised a day after the Jammu and Kashmir government issued a statement asking political leaders to not visit the Valley as it would disturb the gradual restoration of peace and normal life.
Earlier this month, Mayawati had voiced her support to the Centre's decision to revoke Article 370 of the Constitution that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
"The demand to implement the Constitution's 'social, economic and political justice' in the country by removing Article 370 and 35A, was long pending. The BSP hopes people there will get the benefits of the Central government's decision," Mayawati had said.
