The year 2018 has been a tough one for Facebook. Breach after breach, controversy after contoversy, the series of events that unfolded in 2018 plummeted the faith of the users on the social media giant. And how, its chief opertaing officer (COO) Sheryl Sandberg, who in response to an internal memo admitted to receiving emails from Definers about George Soros, the philanthropist who called Facebook 'a menace to the society', has admitted that Facebook has a long way to go.
Sandbery was speaking at the DLD conference in Munich where she said that past couple of years have indeed been tough for the social media giant and that it needs to do better to protect users' data in future.
"We need to stop abuse more quickly and we need to do better to protect people's data. We have acknowledged our mistakes," the Facebook COO said at the event, as reported by CNBC news.
During her speech, she highlighted five key areas where the company needs to work to fix the host of issues plaguing its platform. The steps Sandberg highlighted during the course of her speech include-- increasing transparency at the company by being more open about the company's transparent about our policies and decisions, increasing safety and security on its platform, ensuring people feel in control of their own data, protecting its users against interference during the elections and cracking down on information and the accounts that spread fake news on its platform.
"Speaking for Mark, for myself and for everyone at Facebook, we are more determined than ever to keep people safe. And we are taking strong actions to do it," she said that Facebook's work was "far from done", the publication reported.
Later the company also announced a new partnership with the German Federal Office for Information Security, which is aimed at helping securing elections in Germany and the European Union.
Facebook, in the past couple of months, has been actively working towards increasing transparency and addressing the issues haunting its platform. Last month, the company released the findings of a civil-rights audit conducted by civil rights and civil liberties leader, Laura Murphy. "We know that we need to do more," Sandberg had said sharing the findings of the audit.
