Virat Kohli on Thursday shared a photo from India's famous win over Australia in the 2016 World T20, in which he can be seen with then captain MS Dhoni. It's apparent that Dhoni and Kohli were at the crease as India pulled off a difficult chase of 161 with a number of quick singles and doubles. Kohli's remarks with respect to Dhoni in his social media post are referring to the same as the duo completed a remarkable victory for their side on a 'special night'

Kohli produced a sublime 82 not out off 51 balls to help India defeat Australia by six wickets and advance to the semifinals. Kohli took charge at a crucial time in what was a virtual quarterfinal, smashing 9 fours and 2 sixes as India reached 161-4 off 19.1 overs in reply to Australia's 160-6.

The No. 3 batsman added 67 off only 31 deliveries with captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (18 not out) after a useful 45-run stand for the fourth wicket with Yuvraj Singh (21) as India scored 59 runs in the last 4.1 overs of the Group 2 game.

Kohli, who had also guided India to a six-wicket win over Pakistan with 55 not out, remained calm during his 15th T20 half-century after Shikhar Dhawan (13), Rohit Sharma (12) and Suresh Raina (10) failed to get going with India struggling at 49-3 in the eighth over.

Kohli batted himself in with Yuvraj and then took the initiative, smashing 19 off the 18th over bowled by James Faulkner and 16 off the 19th from Nathan Coulter-Nile to the delight of more than 25,000 fans.

Dhoni hit Faulkner for a four down the ground to complete a memorable win that set up the 2007 champions against 2012 winners West Indies in the semifinals in Mumbai.

"Thank you. Firstly, I would like to thank the crowd for coming out and supporting us; the support today was unbelievable. They (the crowd) push you through tough times. This is what you play cricket for. You don't like these situations because they are tough. I don't know what to say, because I am overwhelmed by the situation we were in and to win from there was quite an effort. MS kept me calm in the end; I could have got overexcited. Overall good team effort and very happy with my personal contribution.

"Yuvraj wanted to see where he was going after he twisted his ankle. But he stuck in and a few boundaries helped, and then he decided to go for the team's cause. He perished but he made a great call. He wasn't able to push as you want him to push as a runner. He's such an explosive player that you don't want to have him at 60-70 percent. Dhoni and I have always run well between the wickets. We have a great understanding of where to hit the ball. You do that gym fitness for this. When I'm tired, I should be able to run as fast as when I'm on zero. All those trainings paid off today. This innings has to be in the Top 3. But I am a bit emotional, so I will put this on top."

The Anil Kumble-Virat Kohli spat has been a trending topic since the former tweeted his resignation as India coach highlighting his reasons for quitting the high-profile job - among them that Captain Kohli had "reservations" with his style. But with skipper Virat Kohli prepping for the series with the West Indies, his side of the story is yet to be heard. Sources have told NDTV that there were sharp differences and several reasons why to two were almost destined to fall apart. For one, they alleged, "Anil Kumble treated players like school kids."

The coach reportedly gave the players a "dressing-down" after the team lost the ICC Champions Trophy final to Pakistan at The Oval on June 18. The team members, who were feeling terrible about the loss in any case, felt that their coach was scolding them like children and not treating them like professionals, the sources said. The captain, they said, is very possessive about his team in the dressing room and he was upset at the way Kumble spoke to them.

Kumble stepped down as the head coach of the India cricket team on Tuesday and in soon tweeted a long letter, listing his reasons and the circumstances under which he had left the post. The Indian team was on its way to the West Indies at that moment and till now, there has been no response from Kohli on this. While the news of differences between the coach and captain had been doing the rounds for quite a long time, even the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) was taken by surprise by reports that the two were not on talking terms for the 'last six months'.

Nevertheless, the rift was a very defined one and the sources also told NDTV that there were several reasons why to two were almost destined to fall apart.

Kumble wanted to bat first in the final

The source also said that the Indian skipper opted to field in the final but the coach wanted to bat first and put runs on the board. But we all know that Kohli's decision prevailed.

Control over the dressing room

The source elaborated that the two had major issues about dressing room control. The coach wanted players to follow his template -- of a regimented lifestyle -- which Kohli rejected because the current crop feels they multi-task.

Differences began during Australia series

According to the source, the differences first cropped up during the Australia series earlier this year when Kumble decided to field left-arm wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav in place of the injured Kohli in the fourth and final Test at Dharamsala. It seems Kohli was not aware of Yadav's selection.

The Indian cricket team on Wednesday reached Port of Spain (Trinidad) for a limited-overs series against the West Indies. The first ODI is scheduled for June 23 (Friday).

The cricketing fraternity is still waiting to hear from Kohli on the issue, but the Indian captain has been silent so far.

India vs Australia Test matches have more often than not led to quite a few fiery encounters over the years. The second Test at Perth witnessed something similar when warring captains Virat Kohli and Tim Paine were caught on the stump mic having a verbal exchange towards the beginning of the day when the latter was batting. It all happened on Monday when Australia were gaining control over proceedings and Paine reminded Kohli of how the Indian captain had lost his cool on day three. On-field umpire Chris Gaffaney intervened just in the nick of time and diffused the situation immediately. The exchange is as follows-

Tim Paine to Virat Kohli: “You’re the one that lost it yesterday, now you’re trying to be cool today.”

Umpire Chris Gaffaney: “That’s enough,”

Tim Paine: ” We are allowed to talk.”

Gaffaney: “Play the game.“You guys are the captains. Tim, you’re the captain.”

But Paine couldn’t resist one last prod towards Kohli and said, “Keep your cool, Virat.” Kohli responded with a wry smile.

When off-spinner Nathan Lyon was asked about his views on the incident that occurred on Sunday, the 31-year-old, while speaking at the post-match press conference said, “Tim just asked him where he was going for dinner,” Nathan Lyon said. “I’ve played enough cricket against Virat to know what he’s like. “Virat’s Virat. Virat Kohli is a great player. He plays on emotion. I’m not worried about what he’s doing or India’s doing.”

Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey was critical of Kohli’s attitude in the entire episode and told Macquarie Sports Radio, “Kohli is out of control … I don’t like his attitude at the moment.”

Virat Kohli said Rohit Sharma understands what he needs to do and said the transition from the middle-order to opening spot is more mental adjustment than anything else.

Ahead of the 1st Test between India and South Africa, starting October 2, Virat Kohli confirmed Rohit Sharma would open along with Mayank Agarwal. In fact, India named the playing XI for the 1st Test on its eve after captain Kohli addressed the press conference in Visakhapatnam.

"In Test cricket I started at (number) six then came up to four. It was more of a mental thing. If you can convince yourself you can do it. Test cricket is about finding your game in different conditions," Virat Kohli said on Tuesday.

"We are not looking at a certain kind of display of batting from Rohit. It is about him finding his game at the top. Yes, his strength is to take the game forward. Like what Viru bhai used to do for the team for a long period.

"So, it is not as if someone would have told Viru bhai to attack and get a hundred before lunch. His natural instinct took over and he could demolish attacks once he felt comfortable.

"He definitely has the ability. If the wicket is challenging and then obviously you won't see him smashing the ball, he knows what to do."

Meanwhile, Virat Kohli expects Rohit Sharma to emulate his ODI route to opening success in Tests.

Rohit Sharma had played in the middle-order for 81 ODIs before the then India captain, MS Dhoni came up with the idea of promoting him to the opener's slot. Rohit found instant success and his career changed for good after the promotion.

Rohit has scored 25 hundreds, including 3 double hundreds, ever since his promotion to the opener's slot in 2013.

"For Rohit as well, clarity of role knowing that you have to play in a certain way, is very crucial for a player and for us the communication happened long ago," Virat Kohli said.

"But we could not see a situation but now there is a situation and it is an ideal time to go ahead with it because we have spoken about it. ODIs was same with him.

"He was batting in the middle order and then suddenly opening conversations happened and within 6-8 months he was opening and we all know what happened after that. If he can do what he did in ODIs, it will be great for Indian cricket."

ICC Rankings: Virat Kohli Achieves Rare Landmark, Surpasses Brian Lara

Virat Kohli became only the second batsman to cross the 900-point mark in both Tests and ODIs on the ICC rankings.

India captain Virat Kohli on Tuesday became the second batsman to cross 900-point mark in both Tests and ODIs. Kohli's prolific run with the bat has helped him attain the rare feat in the latest update in the ICC ODI Player Rankings, which also saw Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan and India pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah take the joint-top position among bowlers. Kohli has thus moved ahead of Brian Lara in the all-timers' list, having also overtaken him in the all-timers' Test list last month. Kohli is now seventh in the ODI list of all-time rankings that is led by Vivian Richards with 935 points and the India captain is now a good 22 points clear of Sachin Tendulkar, whose ODI career high of 887 points came against Zimbabwe in January 1998. Kohli's aggregate is the best since Brian Lara reached 911 points in March 1993.

Kohli has also become only the second batsman after South Africa's AB de Villiers to attain the 900-point mark concurrently in both forms of the game and one among only five to have crossed 900 points in both forms of the game as he consolidated his top position with 558 runs in the 5-1 series win over South Africa, during which he slammed three centuries.

India opener Shikhar Dhawan, who aggregated 323 runs in the South Africa series, is another notable gainer in the latest rankings even as a clutch of Indian bowlers made rapid strides in the latest rankings, including the wrist-spin duo of Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav.

Leg-spinner Chahal has moved up eight slots to the 21st position with 16 wickets in the South Africa series while Chinaman bowler Yadav's 17 scalps have helped him move up 15 positions to take the 47th position. Bumrah's eight wickets have lifted him two places to take the joint-first position.

Rashid has joined Bumrah at the top with 16 wickets in the series against Zimbabwe which Afghanistan won 4-1 to become the youngest to attain top ranking. His 51 runs in two innings in the series, including a brisk 43 in the final match in Sharjah on Monday, has also helped him break into the top-five in the list of all-rounders while he has also moved up 11 slots to take 114th place among batsmen.

India vs New Zealand: Flexible with ideas but focus on winning, says Virat Kohli

India vs New Zealand: Virat Kohli said India will be open to trying out different things in the lead up to the World Cup but added India's focus will still be on winning the ODI series against New Zealand starting January 23.

Virat Kohli has promised to be flexible in the ODI series against New Zealand but he was clear the focus would still be on winning matches as India head towards the World Cup. These are the final stages of preparations for the showpiece event and India will be confident after beating Australia in the ODI series last week.

MS Dhoni returned to form with three consecutive half-centuries against Australia which has to an extent solved India's middle-order woes. However, there are still some holes that need to be plugged and Virat Kohli said India will look to do that along the way - they have 10 more ODIs left from hereon before the World Cup and each one of them will be critical.

"Winning is going to be a very important factor. When you are playing for your country, you want to win every game you play but the main thing is not to be desperate at this stage," Kohli told the media on the eve of the first India-New Zealand ODI to be played on January 23.

"There needs to be a good atmosphere in the change room and there needs to be a collective effort towards just refining ourselves as a team approaching the World Cup. And if we need to try a few players here and there just to see how they react in different situations or different positions, we are open to doing that as well.

"We don't want to be too rigid because you have to be flexible in your mind and your preparation in order to be prepared for a big tournament like the World Cup. I think we need a good balance of both even if we back a few players to play at some stage, the idea is still to win games and not just think of it as an experiment. It's an honour to play for your country," He said.

New Zealand will present a far stiffer challenge than Australia. India failed to win a single ODI the last time they toured New Zealand and Kane Williamson's men have been extremely dominant at home.

Needless to say, Kohli is not taking the hosts lightly despite the highs of the last year when they historic bilateral ODI series in South Africa and Austalia

"We played NZ in India as well. They have a good balance in their team. The bowling attack is experienced but not that old. They have that energy and buzz about the same time. They play their cricket in the right way and that's something we appreciate about the New Zealand cricket team," Kohli said.

India tried Khaleel Ahmed, Mohammed Siraj and Vijay Shankar in the ODIs against Australia. Kedar Jadhav and Yuzvendra Chahal, who did not play the first two matches, starred with a fifty and a six-wicket haul in the series decider.

It now remains to be seen whether Shubman Gill, who joined the team in New Zealand, will get a game.
